The FY 2027 ICD-10-PCS code set is the one every inpatient procedure is now coded and paid under. This year CMS added new procedure codes, deleted others and revised several titles, including late additions announced through a CMS errata.
The changes land where inpatient reimbursement is most sensitive: transcatheter valve and structural heart procedures, spinal fusion and stabilization devices, renal replacement therapy, new drug and biologic administration, and a growing group of New Technology (Section X) codes for AI-assisted detection, triage and procedural navigation. Some devices have also moved out of Section X into the Medical and Surgical tables, so a code that was correct last year can be wrong this year.
In this webinar, we will anchor every change in the ICD-10-PCS Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting 2027, showing how the New Technology section guidelines, the root operation rules for Division and Fusion, and the device guidelines apply to this year's new codes. We will then go section by section through the Tables, Index and Definitions addenda to show which codes are new, which were deleted or moved, and how the changes interact with MS-DRG Version 44 grouping. You will leave with a clear list of what to update in your coding tools, edits and provider education.
Learning Objectives
Why is this topic timely/important?
Every inpatient claim your team codes today depends on the FY 2027 ICD-10-PCS changes. If coders, encoders or claim edits are still applying last year's logic, the errors flow straight into MS-DRG assignment, payment and audit exposure, and the denials surface weeks later. This session helps you verify, catch and correct those errors before they cost you.
The update may look modest, but its impact reaches well beyond the code count. Familiar code choices have changed: custom-made interbody fusion devices are now reported in the Medical and Surgical fusion tables rather than New Technology, transcatheter leaflet laceration procedures (BASILICA and LAMPOON) now point to the Division table, COVID-19-specific immune globulin codes have been deleted, and index pathways for renal replacement therapy have been revised. New Section X codes cover AI-assisted ECG, echocardiography and CT triage, image-guided coronary access, and new valve and aortic stent graft systems.
New codes are only coded correctly when the ICD-10-PCS coding guidelines are applied correctly, and misapplied guidelines are a common source of coding errors and audit findings. Coders, CDI specialists, auditors and compliance teams need to know exactly where last year's habits no longer apply so they can update encoders and edits, educate surgeons and proceduralists on documentation, prevent DRG mismatches, payer edit rejections and denials, keep reporting data accurate, and defend coding decisions in audit.
