The Patient-Driven Payment System (PDPM) the MDS v3.0 Assessment Skills Necessary for Success

Webinar ID: # 1025

Recorded Webinar @ All Day

Duration: 90 minutes

Description:

The Patient-Driven Payment System (PDPM) is a reimbursement model used in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) in the United States. It focuses on patient characteristics and care needs to determine payment rates, unlike the previous system, RUG-IV, which relied heavily on therapy services. To succeed in PDPM, MDS (Minimum Data Set) assessment skills are crucial. These assessments gather data on the patient’s condition and care needs, directly impacting the PDPM reimbursement.

The MDS assessment data calculates the resident’s Patient-Driven Payment Model (PDPM) classification necessary for payment. The MDS contains extensive information on the resident’s nursing and therapy needs, ADL status, cognitive status, behavioral problems, and medical diagnoses. This information defines PDPM case-mix adjusted groups, within which a hierarchy exists that assigns case-mix weights that capture differences in the relative resources used for treating different types of residents.

PDPM adjusts payment for each significant element of a resident’s SNF care, specifically for physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), speech-language pathology (SLP), nursing, and non-therapy ancillaries (NTA). The calculation worksheet was developed to provide clinical staff with a better understanding of how PDPM works. The worksheet translates the standard software code into plain language to assist staff in understanding the logic behind the classification system.

This webinar will provide updated information and insightful tools to perform successfully and to know the PDPM reimbursement program utilizing the MDS assessment (MDS Assessors, Interdisciplinary Team Members, Biller, Medical Record Coders, Directors of Nursing, Administrators, or work in the Business Office).
